Abstract

1. A study was made of the dependence of the distribution of the telomer homologs and the initial rates for the telomerization of propylene with CCl4 in the presence of various amounts of FeCl3 on the concentrations of the components of the FeCl3-solvent system at 145°. 2. The reaction rate and the relative yield of the adduct both increased with increase in the initial amount of catalyst. A complete suppression of the telomerization and an acceleration of the process were observed when certain donor solvents were added. A proposed mechanism for the catalytic action of the iron salt and the effect of the nature of the solvent on the activity of the catalyst are discussed.
