Abstract

1. A study was made of the distribution of the telomer homologs and initial telomerization rates of propylene with CCl4 when catalyzed by iron pentacarbonyl in the presence of n-C6H14, CH3CN, CH3OH, i-C3H7OH, t-C4H9OH, and HCON(CH3)2 at 105°. 2. The probability of a catalytic transfer of the chlorine atom via the intermediate iron compounds increases with increase in the capacity of the solvent to coordinate with the metal atom. The overall telomerization rate depends on the dielectric constant of the solvent. A possible mechanism for the effect exerted by the nature of the solvent is discussed.
