Abstract

We examine the vegetation cover of Sidorov and Gerasimov Islands in comparison with the continental shore of Tabunnaya Bay. It is found that Sidorov, Gerasimov and Bychii Islands differ from the shore area of Tabunnaya Bay in higher species diversity of lichens. Burozems of the continental hummocky terrain are characterized by an eroded shallow and strongly skeletal profile. Sidorov and Gerasimov Islands, unlike the continental shore area, distinctly show an additional phase of development of mixed (coniferous-broad-leaved) forest preceding the contemporary period; furthermore, Artemisa gmelinii associations and lime formations were of widespread occurrence in this area during cold climatic periods, while the continental shore area was the home for birch-shrub communities.
