Abstract
This paper outlines a simple, rapid, potentiometric method for the determination of respiration rates of aquatic organisms weighing from 10 μg to 10 mg dry weight. The procedure employs the oxygen electrode of a Radiometer Blood Gas Analyzer. Syringes serve as the respirometry chambers. The sample volume of the Blood Gas Analyzer is 200 μl, allowing the determination of respiration rates of small animals in respirometer volumes as small as 1 ml. Since the method is potentiometric, it allows the determination of the oxygen-dependent respiration rate for these small animals.
