Abstract

Silver (7440-22-4) is one of the oldest metals known to man. It is rare, but occurs naturally in the environment as a soft, silver-colored metal. Silver metal and its compounds are used in many commercial and industrial settings. Silver is a component in brazing alloys and solders, ball bearings, electroplated ware, sterling ware, and jewelry. Silver has also been used as an antibacterial agent for treating burns and providing antimicrobial properties for catheters. The general population is exposed to silver primarily through drinking water and food. Silver salts may be absorbed by up to 10–20% after ingestion. Occupational inhalation exposure limits for silver or silver compounds are based on argyria, a cosmetic pigmentation of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes that results from long-term systemic exposure to silver or silver compounds.
