Abstract
This article will discuss the electromyographic silent period following electrical stimulation of mixed or cutaneous nerves. The silent period is defined as a transient suppression in the electromyogram (EMG) activity of a voluntarily contracting muscle following stimulation of a mixed nerve (mixed nerve silent period) or of a cutaneous nerve (cutaneous silent period). Although these techniques are uncommonly used in clinical practice, they complement routine nerve conduction studies and in some instances are more sensitive in demonstrating a conduction abnormality than routine studies.
