Abstract
In Aotearoa-New Zealand concerns are consistently raised and contested in the local media regarding the rental situation and tenant security. This article considers the ways in which tenant-related concerns are framed and countered in the local media. In particular, I provide an analysis of the rhetoric used in a newspaper article by a salient landlord spokesperson. The claims and manoeuvres found in this particular piece are also found in other local media articles and thus represent commonly utilised tactics. The effect of such rhetoric to resist regulation and to externalise responsibility and costs and is consistent with contemporary neoliberal capitalist ideology. Facilitated through media framings, such rhetoric acts to entrench rather than ameliorate the rental crisis.
