Abstract

Over the past several years, reports have been published describing antitumor effects of autologous plasma after contact with protein A or bacterial products containing protein A (Bansal et al., 1978; Bensinger et al., 1981; Holohan et al., 1982; Jones et al., 1980; Terman et al., 1980, 1981). Although the efficacy of these manipulations, the best reagents to use, and the mechanism of action are all unclear, considerable enthusiasm regarding the effects of protein A has been generated. This chapter will review the available information on protein A-related plasma immunoadsorption/immunoactivation studies for cancer therapy and to summarize current thoughts and controversies.
