Abstract

The present study aims to identify and analyze the scientific production about the theme of violence against elderly people on Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and the Latin-American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs) databases in the period of nine years (2000-2008). The majority of the studies were published during 2007 and 2008 and those related to health were mainly published in Cadernos de Saude Publica (17, 86%). It was verified that the professionals who studied elderly people mistreatment were nurses, medical doctors and psychologists. The majority of the researches proceed from the Brazilian southwest region (35, 71%), 10, 34% from Sao Paulo and 24,14% from Rio de Janeiro. These studies, in general, have described the same forms of abuse against senior citizens: physical, psychological, sexual, financial or economic, abandonment, neglecting, and self-neglecting. Some studies, led by psychologists and professionals from other fields of knowledge, examined the theme of mistreatment against the elderly through a multidisciplinary perspective. New researches emphasizing violence's prevention are important and necessary, because the violence against the elderly increases mortality risks, reduces significantly the quality of life and generates serious sequels in the victims.
