Abstract

Variation of acceptability with print lightness depends upon the subject, with a multi-ethnic group portrait optimally printed lighter than green foliage. The colour Reproduction Index calculated using the Hunt appearance model is confirmed to be linearly related to the percentage acceptability of reproductions of the two subjects studied, but the correlation coefficient is reduced if print lightness varies. Variation of print lightness leads to an ambiguous relation between CRI and acceptability at constant colour balance. The ambiguity is lost at optimum print lightness where the relation is single-valued
