Abstract

Cancer is a chronic disease caused by the growth of abnormal cells in body tissues and includes the second deadly disease in the world where the number of sufferers increases every year. Some chemotherapy prevention agents using synthetic drugs have been used to treat cancer, but it is relatively expensive and cause poisoning that limits their use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical and develop natural anticancer drugs from hexane extract of Temurui (M. koenigii (Linn.) Spreng) leaves. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of terpenoids and steroids. Then, the hexane extract of Temurui leaves was screened for in vitro cytotoxic activity against human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell line by using the MTT assay. The result showed a very strong cytotoxic activity effect with CD50 values less than 1 μg/ml. This indicated as a potent cytotoxic activity agent for HeLa cancer cells. Therefore, it is expected to conduct further research for cytotoxic test of other cancer cell lines so that it could be developed as raw materials for the manufacture of new drugs.
