Abstract

The temperature dependence of the intensity of photostimulated exoelectron emission from Fe 67 -Co 18 B 14 Si 1 , Fe 15.6 Ni 62.4 B 10 Si 12 and Ni 73 TM 5 Si 10 B 12 metallic glasses (TM denotes one of the following transition elements: Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,Mn,Ni,Ti and V) has been investigated. The measurements were performed in atmospheric air, the exoelectrons being detected by means of an open air point counter with saturated ethanol quenching vapour. The curves of the temperature dependence of the emission intensity display peaks at temperatures corresponding to the structural transformations in investigated materials. This makes the exoelectron emission technique a very useful tool for detecting the phase transformations in amorphous alloys. The possibility to detect the “premature” crystallization of the surface layers of amorphous ribbons by the exoelectron emission technique has been demonstrated.
