Abstract

The use of digital computers for the analysis of pressure surge effects in hydraulic systems is discussed and a method of writing programmes is described in which the sequence of the calculations is broadly similar to that used in conventional graphical analysis but a numerical solution of the conjugate water hammer equations replaces the graphical construction of a surge diagram. Time dependent variables are integrated by the Runge-Kutta method but the standard procedure has been modified so that the calculations can include pressure and flow at the pipe boundaries which are subject to the step changes given by the water hammer equations at each step. The method is illustrated by a programme for the analysis of pressure surge following the shutdown of a pump discharging through a single main to a reservoir.
