Abstract

Prior to the merging of G. & J. Weir Ltd and The Harland Engineering Co. Ltd to form Weir Pumps Ltd, a new design of pump unit was produced to meet the requirements of the Central Electricity Generating Board for 660-MW units. Emphasis was given to the utmost reliability; but in the event of failure, the entire pump can be removed and replaced with a spare pump within 8 h. A new support system, with integral pump- and pipe-handling equipment, was developed. The principal considerations leading to this design are described and details are given of the prototype pump built to prove the concept, the supporting research and development, and early operational experience.
