Abstract

Advancement of free electron laser (FEL) technology into the XUV brings with it many technical challenges. Both FEL gain and mirror reflectivity degrade at shorter wavelengths. However, recent developments in FEL physics, accelerator, and optical technology point the way toward development of a powerful and flexible new class of XUV light sources using FEL technology. We describe the major issues and options that bear on this development.
