Essay| June 01 1956 Oil in the Middle East Brigadier Stephen Hemsley Longrigg Brigadier Stephen Hemsley Longrigg Royal Institute for International Affairs BRIGADIER LONGRIGG received the Order of the British Empire for his services as an official of the Kingdom of Iraq. In 1931, he joined the Iraq Petroleum Company where he later became chairman of the Petroleum Employees Committee for International Labour Affairs. His latest books are A Short History of Eritrea; Iraq, 1900 to 1925; and Oil in the Middle East, Its Discovery and Development. In 1955 he received the degree of D. Litt. from Oxford University. Brigadier Longrigg speaks several languages, including Arabic and Turkish.
