Abstract

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that can affect any system in the body. When the eye is involved, the disease can threaten vision, affecting any anatomical part of an eye. When the retinal blood vessels are damaged sight loss can occur. Ocular screening of all sickle cell patients will help in the early identification of symptoms and immediate treatment or management. The chronic nature of the disease can have a serious impact on the patient's quality of life, and the ophthalmic nurse has an important role to play in promoting health education and patient support.
