Abstract

Until shortly after the Second World War, the provision of artificial eyes by the National Artificial Eye Service (NAES) was only available to service personnel and war pensioners, but with the arrival of the National Health Act in 1948, the specilialised treatment involved was extended to all qualifying NHS patients. Natasha Starling provides an overview of the history of the NAES and the services it provides, and outlines the process of caring for a patient who is having an artificial eye fitted. In the second section of this article, Simon Brown provides a patient perspective on getting an artificial eye, including the process of a prosthetic fitting, and pre- and post-care.
