Abstract

Unemployment is one of the "chronic illnesses of contemporary society". Unemployment within a particular economy is the condition when a part of the population capable of working seeks a job on the labour market, that is, seeks employment but is without a working place and a job. Unemployment can be divided into voluntary (frictional or normal) and involuntary. Voluntary unemployment is not considered a national or economic problem of top priority. This is different when involuntary unemployment is in question - this inimical force to many economies. Instead of contributing to the wealth of the nation, the unemployed are a supported pan of the population. The involuntarily unemployed are regularly excluded from the "world of labour" and from many other components of social life. Large unemployment causes powerful social and political tensions. Croatia has a disturbing level of unemployment (at the end of October 2000 the Croatian Employment Bureau numbered 369.542 unemployed persons).
