Abstract

O presente artigo apresenta a leitura de “O espelho”, de Machado de Assis, a partir da articulação do conto, forma moderna, com a escravidão brasileira. Para isso, primeiro empreende-se a apresentação de algumas leituras anteriores do conto machadiano (Augusto Meyer, Raimundo Faoro, Alfredo Bosi, Abel B. Baptista e John Gledson). Na sequência, o conto machadiano é visto como expressão moderna submetida ao desvio do chão histórico brasileiro.
