Abstract

It is undeniable, in today’s global and information society, the fundamental role of the mass media for the formation of public opinion on various topics. Hence the impor- tance of press freedom, one of the pillars in building a real democratic state, for exercise social, political and cultural functions, in that, by granting quality information, has the potential to contribute to the adoption and enforcement of fundamental rights, such as an ecologically balanced environment, considering that contributes to the formation of public opinion in favor of sustainable development. In this line of reasoning, this paper aims, at first, to analyze the right to press freedom, indicating how the information has become an essential condition for democracy. Then, it addresses the use of communi- cation in favor of the environment, pondering how the conscious action of the mass communication media can contribute to the progress towards sustainable development. Finally, this paper evaluates the promotion of citizenship through quality information, in the current context of globalization and global governance.
