Abstract

Nonlinear optical films of barium sodium niobate, Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN) were prepared on fused quartz, sapphire and magnesia (MgO) substrates by a laser ablation technique using the forth harmonic wave of pulsed Nd3+ : YAG laser. We investigate effects of a gas pressure and a laser density during the deposition on the structural properties, surface morphologies and nonlinear optical properties of the BNN films. As the results, the BNN films were successfully grown epitaxially on the MgO substrate under 3 Pa of an oxygen gas pressure and 2025 mJ of laser density at 800°C. The SHG (Second Harmonic Generation) coefficient of the BNN thin film deposited on the MgO substrate was estimated to be 13 times larger than that of a SiO2 crystal and one forth of a BNN single bulk crystal.
