Abstract

The solubility of zinc sulphate has been measured and the stoichiometry of its reaction and that of zinc chloride in pure lithium nitrate-potassium nitrate eutectic has been established. Chloride ions were shown to increase the stability of the zinc ions, which reacted as a Lux-Flood acid and precipitated as zinc oxide. Nitrate melts containing sodium peroxide, sodium monoxide and sodium hydroxide caused reaction to occur at lower temperatures. No evidence was found for the formation of soluble zincate ions in the presence of excess base.
