Abstract

This paper describes mixed metal complexes of dplH 4, a binucleating Schiff base ligand, prepared by condensation of 1,2-diaminopropane with 3 - formyl - 2 - hydroxybenzoic acid. The complexes dplH 2M(II), dplM(II)A(I) 2· nH 2O, dplM(II)B(II)· nH 2O and dplCu 22.5H 2O (M  Cu or Ni, A  na or Li, B  Mg, Sr or Ba) were isolated. The N 2O 2 coordination site of the ligand is occupied by a copper or nickel ion. Spectroscopic and conductivity measurements suggest that in dplM(II)Li 2 nH 2O one lithium ion is retained in the O 4 coordination site, in the solid state and in solution, but that this does not occur with the corresponding sodium complexes. In most of the dplM(II)B(II) nH 2O complexes the B(II) ion appears to occupy the O 4 coordination site.
