Abstract

This historical and comparative exploration, primarily of Western military culture, covers three themes: (1) the elements of military culture, (2) the sources of continuity and change in military culture, and (3) the relation between military culture and the larger society. The study of military culture reviewed here does not encompass every cultural contribution (or response) to the preparation for or conduct of war, but is limited rather to the study of those particular beliefs, values, rituals, and other symbolic productions that organize and sustain military organization.
