Abstract
The General Medical Council is failing to meet its statutory three month target for certifying doctors who want to join the medical register through the equivalence routes, its own performance figures show. However, the regulator has said that it expects to reach decisions on 95% of all applications for the certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) and certificate of eligibility for general practice registration (CEGPR) within the three month timeframe by the end of the year. Doctors who have not followed a GMC approved training programme and been awarded a certificate of completion of training (CCT) must have a CESR or CEGPR to be licensed to practise as a consultant or GP in the UK.
