Abstract

Management information systems refer to methods used to manage information collected during an organisation's daily activities and can be used to determine business strategies and support the decision-making process. Plans for modernisation and improvement of service delivery rely on improvements in quality, efficiency and capacity, which, in turn, require strong systems for information storage and handling. The NHS provides a comprehensive range of services including information services to patients to promote good health, prevent disease and reduce health inequalities. It has a strong system for clinical governance and aims to improve the quality of its services. It has become evident that healthcare services has seen a shift from the dominance of clinical professionals to the position where institutions are managed based on market values. The NHS will have to prioritise investment in the training of staff to develop analytical skills of current economical and market forces. Interoperable IT systems with strong security and features facilitating communication will help to improve accessibility to information and decision-making. Regular audit of costs and outcomes will also allow the NHS to set priorities for further development.
