Abstract
In his letter of July 22 to "the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee and the Government's Leadership, " Li Hongzhi advises the government not to regard the Falun Gong as a serious issue if it is truly concerned about the rise and decline of the nation. He states that "one cannot subdue the heart by subduing the person (zhi ren shi zhi bu liao xin de)" and that he does not want "the country and nation to suffer another misfortune." The full text of the letter is as follows: The Central Committee and the government leadership: Greetings to you! Falun Gong is merely a popular activity for practicing gong. It has no organization, and even less does it have any political objectives. Nor has it ever participated in any antigovernment activity. I am a [gong] practitioner and have never had anything to do with political power. I only teach practitioners how to practice gong. If a person wishes to do a good job of practicing gong, he or she must be a person with lofty morals-which is beneficial to the people and the government and causes no harm. This, in fact, has indeed been done. I really cannot understand why the Falun Gong masses are being driven to opposition. A great many people are learning it, and I have always thought the government and the leaders would want to see every Chinese become a person with lofty morals. As far as people's hearts are concerned today, everything will go to ruin if society goes on being as corrupt as it is now. Nor will the endeavors and wishes that the leaders wish to fulfill come to any good result. This is truly the greatest hidden danger that will bring down the Party and the nation. Isn't a government terrible in the eyes of the people if it cracks down on good people as though they were bad people? As the leaders expunge Falun Gong, have they ever considered how people will look at our government in the future? No matter how Falun Gong is denigrated, the people have, after all, a profound understanding of Falun Gong and know they are good people. It is an easy thing to arrest and crack down on people. But the government leadership must know that so many hearts have been lost. This has had serious consequencespeople are completely losing faith in the state and in governments and leaders at all levels and have become greatly disillusioned with the central government. I believe that if the government is truly concerned about the rise and fall of the nation, it should not make such a serious issue of the Falun Gong matter. If we have really done something wrong, please tell us. We can correct it.
