Abstract

In order to understand the relationships between city residents and urban green spaces, a number of investigations have been carried out within the multidisciplinary UNESCO-MAB Programme on Urban Ecosystems ongoing since many years in the city of Rome. Different studies have focussed on : (1) the inhabitants' practices and attitudes of satisfaction/dissatisfactions toward their residential neighbourhood, and (2) their images of, and attitudes toward urban green spaces. The results of these investigations show that : (a) green spaces have a high degree of importance for residents 'urban practices and satisfaction/dissatisfaction with, and attachment to, neighbourhood ; (b) residents and natural science experts tend to evaluate the quality of urban green spaces in different ways ; and (c) urban residents tend to exhibit ambivalent attitudes toward green spaces depending on their socio-demographic characteristics and place of residence.
