Abstract

The linear relationship between hydration heat and lyotropic number has been employed to obtain combined ion-hydration heats of alkali metal cations with the anions, nitrate, nitrite, perchlorate, chlorate, bromate, iodate and the thiocyanate. These values have been employed in conjunction with heat of solution data to derive lattice energies. Other magnitudes, which have been computed, include enthalpies of gaseous anions, anion hydration heats, and the electron affinities of NO 2, NO 3, ClO 3 and ClO 4. The fact that lyotropic numbers indicate different ionic field strengths is discussed.
