Abstract

This work shows how the figure of Virgulino Ferreira da Silva (1888-1938), known as “the king of cangaço”, was most often heroicized in Brazilian cordel pamphlets. Based on this observation, made through the exhibition of excerpts from strings on the topic, social, historical and cultural aspects are presented and commented on that help explain this heroicization of Maria Bonita's (1911-1938) husband. To reach this aim, two theoretical constructs were particularly important for the development of our arguments: the concepts of “social bandit”, developed by the British historian Eric HOBSBAWN, and of “poetic revanchism”, developed by the French researcher Martine KUNZ. In addition to the two theorists, it is also worth highlighting the relevance that had for this research the names of Gustavo BARROSO (2012), Teoberto LANDIM (2005), Humberto MESQUITA (2021), Vera Figueiredo ROCHA (2015) and Francisco Jackson Martins VIEIRA (2012).
