Abstract
Through the use of numerous references and literary quotations, the author demonstrates how the recent (end of the 19th century) Iranian novel represents an invaluable source of knowledge about the town. From an "oblique" perspective, it opens the door to the imaginary world and the myth of urban societies. It also illustrates, in the case of Tehran, the rapid irruption of modernity and gigantism, and the feeling of nostalgia it produces.
