Abstract

This paper focuses attention on the consequences of the process of exurbanisation, which largely accounts for population growth in the Ile de France Region and on the evolution of social differentiation of communes of less than 5 000 inhabitants. Is there a diversification of the social-professional profile, leading to greater homogeneity of periurban communities ? Or is there increased specialization of the communes in favour of such or such a group, there by causing segregation ? The case study of two departments of the «outer ring of the Region» (La Grande Couronne) shows different types of evolution with respect to size and location of the communes. But it further raises the issue of the effects of local policies on access to private periurban housing units.
