Abstract

The town territory is difficult to identify in China. Three territories overlap and follow criteria, respectively administrative, physical and functional. Since 1955, the authorities have issued various definitions concerning the notions of town, market town or urban concentration. The current rules dale from 1984 and 1986, but they were modified again during the fourth census of the Chinese population.
