Abstract

This article explores happiness as a captivating subject that has garnered significant attention across various fields including science, philosophy, psychology and scholarly discourse. Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani, an esteemed scholar from Indonesia, provides insights into the concept of happiness, asserting that it lies in possessing a conscientious heart, maintaining patience in adversity, and cultivating contentment with one’s circumstances. To facilitate a deeper understanding of textual interpretation, Hans-Georg Gadamer, a prominent German philosopher, introduced a methodological framework known as hermeneutics, emphasizing the significance of historical context and linguistic nuances. This article employs a descriptive analytical approach through library research, primarily drawing upon Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani’s seminal work, Nasa’ih al-‘Ibad. Applying Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory, the article delves into the historical context of the text and explores novel interpretations through the fusion of the original text and the interpreter’s perspective. The findings suggest that achieving happiness involves traversing three essential phases: cultivating patience, nurturing a conscious heart, and embracing contentment (qana‘ah).
