Abstract
This research is motivated by student learning outcomes for a number of mathematics subjects that are still low. Learning outcomes are basically a comprehensive description of the ability of students during the education program at their level. These comprehensive abilities include understanding, connection skills, reasoning, communication skills and student problem solving abilities. By looking at the low learning outcomes, students' mathematical abilities need to be improved. This study aims to find out and describe: 1) the mathematical abilities of new students in 2017/2018 IAIN Padangsidimpuan Mathematics Education Study Program for elementary / middle school, high school level and combined ability at the elementary / middle and high school levels; 2) the percentage of the total number of new students who are categorized as graduating and not graduating for the ability of elementary / junior high school, high school level and the combined ability of elementary / junior high and high school level. The type of research used by researchers is more on descriptive research (descriptive research). The research subjects were new students of the Tadris Matematika IAIN Padangsidimpuan 2017/2018. Based on the results of the research conducted, it can be concluded that the new students of the 2017/2018 jurusan Tadris /Pendidikan Matematika IAIN Padangsidimpuan for the understanding of elementary / junior high school level is higher than their comprehension ability of high school level. For the elementary / junior high school level their graduation rate is 25.26% while the high school level is only 2.11% and if combined the two levels are between the ability of elementary / middle school and the ability of high school to be 4.21%.
