Abstract

On August 19, 1998, Jim Chambliss was blindsided by an SUV while standing in a parking lot. He suffered knee, back, neck, and brain injuries in that accident. He walked away from the auto accident scene, but could not leave behind the unexpected consequences, which substantially changed his life. In that incident he injured the left side as well as the front parts of his brain. He views the left part of the brain as the efficiency side that is responsible for processing words, numbers, lists and sequencing, while the frontal lobe is the control center. The right part of the brain is the artistic side because it is responsible for functions of creativity, intuition, and physical coordination. Jim has chosen to use those functions of his brain that now work the best, rather than struggling continuously and feeling frustrated for what he has lost. He virtually had no artistic training before he sustained the injuries causing him epilepsy. The first painting he completed, called, “Shadows of the Past” won a class award. His sculpture, “Broken Crank Organ” won an award for “Best Ceramic Sculpture” in the first art exhibit he entered.
