Abstract

Cindy Ross began making tiles as a hobby about 12 years ago. She was looking for a medium for her artistic expression and recalled fond memories of working in clay as a child. She took various classes at Lill Street Studios in Chicago, and found her passion in Bas-Relief (3 dimensional) tile making. She incorporates elements of the context in many of her designs, which also reflect her interests in nature and travel. She relies heavily on inspiration from her garden and the smaller world within the garden. Traveling to places such as Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean countries have also provided her a wealth of inspiration. Epilepsy for her can be quite unnerving. She tries to portray a sense of calmness and serenity in her art. This portrayal is very satisfying for her as a means to counter her disease. Her husband, Stuart, has now joined her in this endeavor and their goal at C-Nik Tiles is to create beautiful, handmade tiles that will last for centuries to come.
