Abstract

Raymond Trousson : Isabelle de Charrière and European literature. Madame de Charrière, who was exceptionally cultivated (she could read Latin, Italian, English and German), gave evidence in her correspondence and works of a cosmopolitan culture. But as her education was classical and French, towards the end of her life, she had little sympathy for developments in aesthetics, and her oracles were still Batteux and La Harpe.
