Abstract
Judy Zappacosta addresses the legacy of Dora Kalff's sandplay therapy as it continues to impact us in the present. Zappacosta clarifies Kalff's idea that “hidden or rejected parts of the personality can be more easily confronted and healed” after a client has touched the Self through images and symbols created in the sand. She adds that Kalff viewed the numinous moments which arose for clients in their trays at pivotal moments in their sandplay processes as holding spiritual qualities of the religious function, somatic representations, and references to the instincts, often depicted as animals. Following these pivotal moments and images, clients often find new meaning in their lives.
