Abstract

This new section of the journal aims to review material from the broad field of information technology, and will include relevant teaching material. Why should we offer such a section in a journal of palliative medicine? In this particular field of patient care, where art and science have to be so skilfully blended, each discipline also needs to be aware of the liberating effect of the efficient use of technology. Computers have become an everyday reality of office life, although those above the age of thirtysomething may not view this trend with equanimity. This divide between the computerate and the noncomputerate presents such a section with an impossible challenge. The needs of the expert will require a level of detail that will be offputting to the nonexpert. This section will try to offer something of interest to both camps, but some forbearance from the readership will be required. Information technology is based upon the computer and its capacities. It is concerned with the compilation, storage and retrieval of significant and useful data. With the proper processing of such data, decision making should be improved. Information technology also covers the design and use of forms for data collection, the use of modern communication facilities, and the linkage of electronic equipment to the computer system, all of which provide access to data. It can be seen therefore that not only is information technology applicable to the development of clinical care, but also to the process of management. The management of information needed by a whole organization is the responsibility of all senior managers, and it is fundamental to the success of that enterprise, large or small, public or private. For this section to meet the future needs of readers, the Editor would be pleased to hear of products or topics to review, particularly from overseas readers. It would also be extremely helpful to have feedback about the level of detail and complexity readers find useful.
