Abstract
Small amounts of hydrogen are present in most forms of carbon black. The influence of hydrogen content on the reaction of oxygen with carbon blacks was investigated in detail. The atomic ratio of carbon to hydrogen in the oxidation products varied with the length of oxidation, indicating non-uniformity of distribution of hydrogen with respect to carbon. The reaction rate of channel blacks was observed to be directly proportional to total hydrogen content. However, the reaction rate of oxygen with furnace blacks (total hydrogen contents less than 0.3%) did not show any relationship with hydrogen content. Hydrogen content was varied by heat treatment and again the rate of reaction for channel blacks was proportional to hydrogen content while the furnace blacks showed no proportionality. The implications of the reactivity are discussed in terms of the structure of carbon blacks as revealed by adsorption data and X-ray diffraction data.
