Abstract

Thalassemia, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), Lymphoma, and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) belong to a group of blood-related diseases. Stem cell and/or bone marrow transplantations are effective methods widely used in clinical applications to treat these diseases. In this study, we investigated the frequency and distribution of five-locus (HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1 ~ DQB1) HLA haplotypes from 582 individuals and examined the haploidentical related match (HRM) and haploidentical unrelated match (HURM) between the donors and the potential recipients (blood-related patients) in a total of 243 Vietnamese families, which included 243 patients and 399 donors. Our investigations revealed that, among 243 families, there were 49 thalassemia-related, 45 ALL-related, 74 AML-related, 13 lymphoma-related and 62 MDS-related families. Out of the total 1164 five-locus (HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1 ~ DQB1) haplotypes, the highest frequency one was HLA-A*11:01 ~ B*15:02 ~ C*08:01 ~ DRB1*12:02 ~ DQB1*03:01, accounting for 5.62 %. Remarkably, the HRMs of HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1/HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1 ~ DQB1 between thalassemia, ALL, AML, lymphoma, and MDS potential recipients and related donors were 54.1 %/45.9 %, 49.3 %/42.6 %, 52.4 %/49.7 %; 67.9 %/60.3 %, and 55.4 %/43.7 %, respectively. Moreover, the HURMS of HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1/HLA-A ~ B ~ C ~ DRB1 ~ DQB1 between thalassemia, ALL, AML, and MDS potential recipients and unrelated donors were 0.472 %/0.472 %, 0.473/0.473, 0.236 %/0.236 %, and 0.934 %/0.236 %, respectively. Our study provides essential information about HRMs and HURMs for stem cell and/or bone marrow transplantations in the Vietnamese population.
