Abstract
A survey has been made of the growth response shown by 20 filamentous blue-green algal strains to the presence of organic substrates in the medium. Six strains showed no growth in the dark in the presence of any substrate. Among the other 14 strains, relative growth response to added substrates often fell in relation to the sequence: sucrose > fructose > glucose > maltose. The 20 strains can be classified according to their ability to make use of added 0·01 m sucrose. The different categories include: negligible increase in growth under any circumstances; photoheterotrophic growth only; photoheterotrophic growth + survival in dark; photo-heterotrophic + chemoheterotrophic growth. Three of the strains capable of chemoheterotrophic growth are more restricted in the dark than in the light with respect to the nitrogen sources they can use.
