Abstract

Lawrence F. Locke Kim C. Graber Preparing a special issue for a scholarly journal requires the assistance and support of a considerable number of individuals. First, we extend our sincere appreciation to each of the authors who contributed to this volume. It is a rare event when all of the first-choice invitees accept their nominations to prepare submissions for a topical feature. Such, however, was the case for this issue of The Elementary School Journal. The resulting team of 16 scholars worked diligently, responded perfectly to editorial needs, met deadlines promptly, and produced this truly remarkable collection of articles. Second, we are grateful to Thomas L. Good for our own invitations to serve as guest editors for this special issue, as well as for his continuing commitment to the work of disseminating research-based knowledge about elementary schools. Third, we thank Managing Editor Gail Miller Hinkel for her patient guidance in answering all of our many procedural questions and for her skill in shepherding the 11 manuscripts through to publication. Fourth, we extend special appreciation to Dolly Lambdin from the University of Texas at Austin and toMelinda A. Solmon from Louisiana State University for their invaluable service on the planning committee. Finally, we extend sincere appreciation to the reviewers who assessed the individual manuscripts, provided thoughtful feedback, and offered insightful commentary. They were: Donetta Cothran, Indiana University; Jacqueline D. Goodway-Shiebler, The Ohio State University; Bernard (Bob) Gutin, Professor Emeritus at Teachers College Columbia University and the Medical College
