Abstract
Our studies showed that the influence of shear stress depends on exposure level and duration. A ‘critical shear stress level’ for adherent cells was determined. Under certain conditions shear stress below that level may even have beneficial effects on viability and productivity. Investigations were carried out to enhance the shear stress resistance of the cells. The experiments showed that diminishing the temperature has a negative influence on cell growth, but a beneficial effect on cell viability and productivity under stress conditions. Environmental conditions will impair product quality. First results revealed that omitting serum supplement in the growth medium will result in higher proteolytic activity and in lower quality protein. Further studies will focus on investigations of parameters influencing protein quality.
