Abstract
Two phrases in Terence, lupus in fabula and auribus teneo lupum present a difficult problem in translation, especially considering that they are already linguistically complex forms in their original language, and that translating not only presupposes carrying words over from one language to another, but implies a multitude of factors. From a translation studies perspective, drawing on pragmatic-functionalist and cognitivist approaches, these phrases are analyzed as phraseological units (UFs), studying their meaning within the context of Terence’s work. Then we analyze various methods of translation, including the attempt to provide equivalent expressions, mirroring phrases, conscious estrangement.
