Abstract

A compact fractal UWB antenna is proposed for wireless communications. The overall dimension of the antenna is 28×28×1.6mm3 with FR4 substrate and suitable for easy integration. Compared with the reference circle monopole antenna, the designed fractal antenna improves the gain and achieves better fractional bandwidth of 175% covering the frequency range from 3.3 GHz to more than 50 GHz with return loss less than −10dB. The proposed fractal antenna is conformal to different curvature of the cylinder. The simulated results by HFSS show that compared with the planar UWB antenna, the VSWR of conformal antenna is basically unchanged. The radiation pattern changes very small and can still keep the omni-directional at low frequency condition, however, the radiation change of high frequency is relatively large. The longitudinal bending has a stronger effect on antenna performance than transverse bending.
