Abstract

A modified Born approximation is used to calculate the cross sections for capture of electrons from helium atoms by fast protons and for capture from hydrogen atoms by helium ions. A comparison is made with experimental data and it is shown that the Brinkman-Kramers approximation is inadequate. The theoretical results lend support to the data of Hasted and Stedeford and cast serious doubts on the accuracy of the data of other experimentalists.
