Abstract

Employing the simplified form of the fixed scattered approximation proposed by Ghosh (see Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.38, p.1065 (1977)) electron capture by fast protons from hydrogen atoms has been studied. The results for the total ground-state capture cross section for H+-H scattering are given from 25 keV to 2 MeV. The results for electron capture by protons in the 2s and 2p states have also been compared with measured values, and the results are in good agreement with experimental and other theoretical results. The present method is strangely unable to reproduce the high energy behaviour predicted by the second Born approximation. The computational labour involved in obtaining the results in the same as that of the first Born approximation.
